2011 La Escepcion Edicion Regional Italia Selecto Finos

It’s been about a year since I last reviewed a 2011 La Escepcion Edicion Regional Italia Selecto Fino. Been hunkering around the humidor and this called out to me saying, tonight’s the night. LOL.

Let’s see how it is progressing…..

The 2011 Edicion Regional Italia La Escepcion Selecto Finos is a delicate looking cigar. It is a Parejos vitola and comes in at a 38 ring gauge and is 6.5 inches in length. There were 2,000 numbered dress boxes released, containing 25 cigars per box.

the wrapper is a warm chestnut brown. Rustic looking. Fairly smooth wrapper with a couple of bumps here and there. The aroma emanating from the wrapper is pure barnyard and earth. Strong, powerful and rich.

The construction is good. Fairly firm throughout the cigar. The triple cap looks a little rustic and the foot is packed.

A quick twist from my punch and we are ready to roll.

The draw is perfect. Nice airflow with a slight resistance

Initial flavours from the cold draw are heavily ladened with cedar, earth, and leather.

Time to take this to the flame…..

First Third
Power personified. Very rich flavour profile. Heavy in cocoa, nutmeg and earth. Medium to full in strength. No harshness though; seamless. a slight twinge of spice on the back end

The draw is nice. Perfect burn. Razor sharp. Nice smoke production. Ash is a ‘Dirty’ white that I usually associated with older cigars.

The retrohale is very full, yet integrated. Nice combination of nutmeg, cocoa, and cedar that moves easily through the nasal passages. Lucious.

The after finish is very lush and luxurious. Great strength on the palate without going over board. Confident in standing on its own. Beautifully balanced and integrated. What a difference a year makes. Nutmeg and cocoa lead the way, followed by cedar and earth, with a slight hint of mint in the back end. The strength adds to the bliss. Much more approachable and complex after 2 yearrs of being released.

Pairing this with some Blanton’s single barrel. What a great combination. The sweetness of the bourbon combines nicely with the earthiness and cocoa in the La Escpecion Selecto Fino. Magical!!!

Second Third
This is smoking beautifully rightnow. Everything is in sync and just delivering in spades. Lots of nuance and complexity for a young cigar. Very precise, like German engineering in its delivery of flavours and well balanced relative to the strength of the cigar. The strength itself in in the medium category now. Dialed down just a little bit. Strong yet refined. Like James Bond. Maybe I should try to find box 007. LOL

The retrohale is still lush yet elegant. Masculine and refined. The perfect amount of kick without searing the nasal passages. Nutmeg, cocoa and eucalyptus confidently stride through the nasal passages.

The after finish has some great complexity going on. Earth, nutmeg, followed by leather, cedar and eucalyptus combine to deliver a refreshing flavour profile. Lingers long on the palate, commanding attention without asking for it. You are drawn to the experience. The strength is at medium level which is perfect support for the flavours.

Final Third
The cigar has presence. It’s like watching someone walk into the room and everyone stops and notices. Charismatic, focused, confident, yet refined and approachable. Has the ability to connect with people, regardless of their background. It’s a cigar that you are drawn to and can’t help but want to buy these in bulk.

The retrohale is the perfect balance between richness and elegance. Nutmeg, cedar, eucalyptus and earth move effortlessly through the nasal passages.

The after finish combines brilliantly with the Blanton’s Single Barrel. The offset between sweetness and the core earthiness and depth of flavours of the cigar are just striking. Like James Bond and shaken martinis. A beautiful combination of earth, cedar, cocoa, nutmeg and eucalyptus lingers on the palate confidently. A perfect way to relax and unwind….

Final Impressions
This cigar is the real deal. A beautiful display of precision, elegance, and refinement. Confident in its skin and delivers in spades. Age has really brought this cigar together. Great combination of flavours, perfect amount of strength, excellent tobacco and first class construction. Masculine, confident yet approachable. This is a cigar that those who have stocked up on them are in for many great smoking experiences for years to come.
