2006 Edicion Regional Asia Pacifico Punch Super Robusto

Recieved this from a trade with a great BOTL for out West. Been hearing a lot of good things about this cigar. The Punch marca and I have an evolving relationship. At first, it wasn’t in my wheelhouse however, it has started to grow on me. I’ve been starting to smoke different vitolas from the lineup and had the opportunity to smoke both recent production, aged, vintage and Edicion Regionals to get a better appreciation for the marca. So far, the results have been mixed. I will say that the Edicion Regionals that I have smoked have been excellent.

Let’s see how this is progressing….

The 2006 Edicion Regional Asia Pacifico Punch Super Robusto is a fairly daunting cigar. It is a Dobles vitola, has a ring gauge of 50 ring gauge and is 6.1inches in length. There were 1,720 numbered 25 count Slide Lid boxes and 420 numbered 50 count Slide Lid Boxes released in 2006. An additional 1,680 numbered 25 count Slide Lid boxes and 400 numbered 50 count Slide Lid Boxes released in 2007.

The wrapper has a caramel/light hazelnut hue of brown to it. Very silky smooth. Aromas of barnyard, caramel vanilla wafer and cocoa emanate from the wrapper.

The construction is excellent. Nice and firm throughout the cigar with a slight give when squeezed. The rounded triple cap looks beautiful and the foot is packed.

A quick twist from my punch (no pun intended) and we are ready for ignition.

Time to take this to the flame…..

First Third
Very delicate and enticing flavour profile. Citrus, leather, floral notes, cinnamon and a hint of earth welcome me to the experience. Strength is at a medium level. Great complexity to start.

The draw and burn are perfect. The ash is a ‘Dirty’ whitish grey and the smoke production is excellent. This is well constructed.

The retrohale has some nice depth to it. Leather, citrus, floral notes and cinnamon combine for a very lush and elegant profile. Leaves a love bite as it makes its way through the nasal passages.

The after finish has some legs to it. Good staying power on the palate. Starts off with a good dose of citrus, cinnamon and leather, followed by floral notes and a touch of earth. Good balance between strength and flavour here. This has aged gracefully as everything is performing in unison. Really starting to re think my views on the Punch marca as I smoke this…..

Second Third
This is evolving nicely. Cocoa has entered the fray, complimenting the citrus, leather and floral notes. Cinnamon has quietly taken a leave of absence. The floral note reminds me of lavendar. Beautiful compliment of flavours right now. The cocoa adds some depth to the lighter citrus and floral notes. The strength continues to be at a medium level.

The retrohale brings citrus, lavendar and leather with a hint of cinnamon. Not as pronounced as the first third but still enough to leave a love tap as it makes its way through the nasal passages.

The after finish bring a beautiful array of citrus and leather, followed by lavendar and cocoa. Really enjoying the flavour profile of this cigar. Might have to add this to the box purchase list. Very refined and complex flavour profile. Balance needs to be perfect between strength and flavours as the flavour profile is delicate. Any imbalance would create havoc I think. Luckily, this is firing on all cylinders. Everything working in unison to provide a long, gentle and elegant stay on the palate.

Final Third
This is just smoking beautifully now. Strength has picked up incrementally however, still stays in the medium category; amplifies the citrus and floral notes. Some earthiness has joined into the fun, complimenting cocoa and leather so they can keep up with the citrus/floral combo.

The retrohale has more depth to it. Citrus, leather, floral notes and earthiness now dance their way through the nasal passages. Cinnamon is back to give a little extra kick to it in the final third.

The after finish seems to be more fuller with the amplification of the citrus and floral notes, combined with the addition of the earthiness and cinnamon. Citrus and leather lead the way, followed by earthiness and floral notes while cinnamon leaves its calling card at the end. Beautiful transition of flavours and great length on the palate. The slight uptick in strength really helps balance out the flavour profile. This is going to be smoked till it burns my finger tips as this flavour profile has me at hello…..

Final Impressions
OK. I get it now, at least in terms of the Punch Edicion Regionals. The ones that I have smoked over the course of this year have been consistently fantastic regardless of country sponsorship. Looks like I will be on the hunt for some additional Punch Edicion Regional in the near future as I work my way through the regular production vitolas. My impressions so far is that the Edicion Regional versions are more ‘amped’ up in strength, which really brings out the flavours.

Nice evolution and transition of flavours throughout the cigar. Tobacco and construction were excellent. Wonderful balance between strength and flavours. Beautiful complexity and wonderfully refined. No harshness at all. This has aged gracefully.

Thank you to the great BOTL who shared this with me. My eyes have been opened…..
