1994 – 1994 Humidor

This was one of the best cigars if not the best cigar that I have had the privilege of trying at a recent herf. Thank you to the BOTL who shared this among us. It was truly an amazing experience.

After a few months of searching, I had the opportunity to procure one to enjoy. The Habanos 1994 is regarded by many in the cigar community as one of the three top cigars produced by Habanos SA. The 1994, 1492 and the Cubatobacco 25th Anniversario humidors are amongst the most highly sought after and are considered the ‘Holy Grail’ of cigars.

Let’s see how this is progressing….

The 1994 Humidor was hand made in the H. Upmann factory to commemorate the establishment of Habanos SA. There were 502 humidors made. Each humidor contained 50 cigars. Each cigar was banded with a special ‘1994’ band.

The official vitola name of this cigar is a Corona Gordas which, is a 46 ring gauge and is 5.6 inches in length.

The wrapper is a silky, smooth milk chocolate, chestnut hue of brown. Just beautiful. Sleek and inviting. Aromas of milk chocolate, hazelnut, noughut and earth emanate from the wrapper. Delicious.

The construction is excellent. Firm throughout the cigar with a slight give when squeezed. The triple cap is nicely rounded and the foot is packed.

A quick twist of my punch and we are ready to go. Very excited….

The draw is perfect. Excellent airflow with a slight resistance.

Initial flavours from the cold draw are mint, leather, floral notes and a hint of citrus. Unbelievably good.

Time to take this to the flame….

First Third
Mint, earth, cedar and a hint of citrus welcome me to the first third. Such a delicious flavour profile. Strength is at a medium level. Very lush, vivid, yet smooth. Coats the palate gently. A terrific start.

The draw is perfect. Just the right amount of resistance. A nice ease to smoking this. The smoke production fills the evening air with blue smoke. This is a perfect night to enjoy this cigar. No wind or humidity. Excellent conditions. The burn is razor sharp and the ash is a ‘Dirty’ light grey.

The retrohale is so unique. Cuban mint leaves come to mind as the smoke easily moves through the nasal passages. A nice tinge of spice adds additional excitement.

The after finish is expansive. Just stays on the palate forever. Allows you to really slow down and enjoy the experience. Mint, earth, cedar come to the forefront, followed by citrus and cinnamon. This is an amazing smoke so far. Crazy good. Reinforces why it is one of the best cigars that I have enjoyed….

Second Third
This is just a joy to smoke. Beautiful bouquet of aromas coming from the smoke and the flavour profile just lulls you into submission. Hypnotic, haunting and tranquilizing. I can’t help looking at the cigar in amazement after every puff.

Mint, leather, earth and citrus are joined by cocoa, adding more depth to the flavour profile. Rich and decadent. The strength continues to stay at a medium level. Very smooth and cloying on the palate. No harshness to speak of.

The retrohale brings Cuban mint, cinnamon and cocoa. A gorgeous combination. So tantalizing as it moves through the nasal passages.

The after finish continues to be just brilliant. The cocoa adds a nice richness to the cigar, combining nicely with mint, earth, leather and citrus. So expansive on the palate. Covers the whole area with a delicious array of flavours. So beautifully integrated and balanced. This gives you the feeling of Christmas morning as you smoke it….

Final Third
Can’t help but reminisce about the great Herf that I attended earlier this year. So many great BOTLs and SOTLs that I had the opportunity to finally meet in person. Everyone was so welcoming. The energy of the group was fantastic. Such an amazing group of people. The opportunity to share some great cigars with them was an added bonus. Treasured memories for sure.

This cigar will always remind me of that herf as it was the first time I had the opportunity and privilege to try one. The generosity of this group is just amazing.

Such a complex cigar. Cream comes into the foray, joining mint, cocoa, earth, leather and citrus. An amazing layering of flavours. Rounds out the profile. So freakin good right now. Strength has picked up slightly but stays at the medium level.

The retrohale continues to bring cuban mint, cinammon, and cocoa. So decadent as it moves through the nasal passages. Complete bliss.

The after finish is just a ‘fugetabboutit’ type of moment. Each draw brings a scintillating flavour profile that is so unique. Mint, cocoa, earth and cream, followed by citrus and earth. Just a symphony of flavours that coat your palate with the gentleness of a warm embrace. Heart warming and comforting. Makes you feel that everything is all good in the world.

Final Impressions
I am star struck and in awe. An experience that is one for the ages. Beautiful array of flavours. Excellent balance between flavour and strength. A uniqueness in its flavour profile that is just stunning and a level of complexity that is unparalleled. Iconic…..
