Vacation! Nice to be away and in the sunshine again. Been lots of talk of the Punch marca lately so I decided to fire this up. I recall that the last one I smoked was very good. In fact, it made me rethink about this marca and I started to selectively started to buy a few vitolas here and there.
Let’s see how it is progressing…..
The 2011 Edicion Regional Portugal Punch Descobridores is a nice looking cigar. This is a a Robustos vitola that comes in at a 50 ring gauge and is 4.9 inches in length. There were 2,500 numbered 10 count semi Nature Boites

The wrapper is alight, honeyed, caramel hue of brown. Fairly smooth to the touch with sight veinage. Aromas of milk chocolate, caramel, earth and cream emanate from the wrapper.
Construction is ok. Firm throughout the cigar however, the bottom of the cigar is a little too firm. Hope it doesn’t lead to draw problems. The rounded triple cap looks good and the foot is packed.
A quick twist from my multi punch and we are ready to roll.
The draw is good. Ironically, a little open. Now I wonder if it will burn hot. Will have to go slow on this one…
Initial flavours from the cold draw are watermelon, citrus, floral notes and cocoa. Very interesting…..
Time to take this to the flame….
Citrus, floral notes, eucalyptus, cocoa and leather, with a touch of honey welcome me with open arms. Complex yet gentle. Delicate and vibrant. Strength is at a medium level.
The draw and burn are good. Ample smoke production and the ash is a ‘Dirty’ greyish white.
The retrohale is very intoxicating. Gentle waves of citrus, floral notes, cocoa and honey gently make their way through the nasal passages.
The after finish is just beautiful. Vibrant and alive. Citrus, leather and cocoa to start, followed by floral notes, honey and leather. Deeply complex and refined. Well integrated and balanced between strength and flavours despite its relative youth. Strength is at a medium level, really allowing the flavours to dance on the palate. Yummy so far.
Citrus and floral notes are joined by leather, earth and honey with touches of cocoa and leather. The eucalyptus have died down. Beautifully balanced between medium strength and delicate, complex flavour profile.
The retrohale is soooo smooth and soothing. Citrus, floral notes and earth gently move through the nasal passages.
The after finish just lasts forever. Vibrant, alive and fresh. Like a gorgeous Spring morning. Puts zip in your step and a smile on your face. Citrus and earth lead the way, followed by floral notes, cocoa and touches of honey. Just brilliant….
Dark chocolate has entered the fray, combining nicely with earth, leather, floral notes, citrus and touches of honey. Much deeper flavour profile now. What a treat to smoke this cigar. Luscious, vibrant and complex. Everything is in perfect balance.
The retrohale brings dark chocolate, earth and citrus with a touch of floral notes. Very rich flavour profile that moves gently through the nasal passages.
The after finish is so well balanced between the savoury and sweet flavours as well as between strength and flavour profile. Beautiful layers of dark chocolate, citrus, and earth, followed by leather, honey and floral notes. A complex layering of flavours. Bing cherries come to mind at times, providing an extra dimension of complexity. These are smoking beautifully right now.
This cigar continues to impress and deliver in spades. Just a wonderfully balanced cigar, in terms of flavours and strength as well as in its diversity of flavours. A treat to enjoy and a cigar worthy of hunting down a few boxes to enjoy over time…..
