Last day of vacation. It’s been nice and relaxing time. Got to smoke a number of great cigars and even herf here and there. Decided to finish off things with a bang and fire up a cigar that I was fortunate enough to procure .

Let’s see how this is progressing….

The 2007 Partagas Sobresalientes is from the Antique Humidor series. Every year, Habanos SA produces a special humidor filled with a unique vitola that hasn’t been released as a regular production cigar. This is a Sobresalientes vitola that comes in at a 53 ring gauge and is 6 inches in length. There were 200 numbered antique humidors released. Each contained 50 cigars.

The wrapper is a medium hued caramel brown. Very smooth to the touch. Aromas of barnyard, earth, leather and caramel emanate from the wrapper. Very strong aroma profile, particularly the barnyard note. Powerful on the nostrils.

The construction is good. Seems a little spongy however, I don’t think it is underfilled. The rounded triple cap looks good and the foot is packed.

A quick chomp (as I forgot both my cutter and multi punch) and we are ready to roll.

The draw is good. Nice airflow with a slight resistance.

Initial flavours from the cold draw are earth, leather, sourdough bread and a touch of black pepper.

Time to take this to the flame….

First Third
A brooding, powerful yet elegant (so far) flavour profile to start. Earth, black pepper, leather and a touch of expresso hit the palate on the get go. Must respect the flavour profile and strength as this could turn into a full blown powerhouse quickly. Strength is at a medium level, teetering on medium full. Very lush and robust flavours to start….

The draw and burn are perfect. Ample smoke production and the ash is a ‘Dirty’ light grey.

The retrohale brings black pepper, earth and expresso as it assertively moves through the nasal passages.

The after finish is equally robust. Strong layers of black pepper, earth, leather and expresso hit the palate with a unified punch. Nothing shy about this flavour profile. Rich on the palate yet, no harshness. Pure, powerful flavours. Slow smoking will be the rule as I smoke this cigar…..

Second Third
Cedar has entered the flavour profile in a big way, amplifying an already strong flavour profile of leather, earth, black pepper and expresso. This is a powerhouse. Muscular, assertive, robust and brazen. Ironically, there is no harshness to the cigar however, it is heavy on the palate. The strength has settled into the medium category, providing some reprieve to the senses….

The retrohale is full of black pepper, cedar and earth. Unapologetic as it strongly moves through the nasal passages.

The after finish is just a ball buster. Heavy on the palate. Strong layers of earth and leather, followed by black pepper and cedar and finished off with expresso. This is a powerful cigar that has not lost a step over the years. Time in the humidor has allowed the flavour profile to conspire together and ensure that the maximum amount of flavour a palate can handle is achieved, without becoming harsh. Wowzers!

Final Third
Ahhhhh!!!!! Much better. The flavours have toned down and become more integrated, allowing the palate to recover and enjoy this final third. Nice layers of leather, earth, cedar and slight hints of black pepper combine nicely with the addition of roasted nuts. The expresso note has died off, while the addition of roasted nuts has really rounded out the flavour profile, providing a calming efffect.

The retrohale is equally relaxed. Roasted nuts, earth and leather move smoothly and gently through the nasal passages. Much better….

The after finish is knocking it out of the park right now. Beautiful layers of roasted nuts, earth, leather and cedar are more kinder to the palate, allowing the flavours to just gently meld. Great length to the flavour profile as well, supported nicely by the medium level of strength. An excellent way to finish…..

Final Impressions
This cigar has the essence to continue to age gracefully over time. The power of the cigar is impressive, particularly in the first two thirds. If the final third is an indication of things to come, this will be a spectacular smoke. The quality of tobacco, construction, robust flavour profile and impressive strength makes me very excited of how this evolves over time.
