This is one of those cigars that I wish were never discontinued. The El Roy Del Mundo marca had an array of sizes that have sadly been deleted from the Habanos portfolio.
I remember being introduced to this marca. It was 2009 and I was in my second year of really focusing on learning about cigars and the different marcas and flavour profiles.
I remember my friend saying to me ‘you are now ready for something like this’. I asked him what he meant and he replied, ‘you had to develop your palate to enjoy something like this. He was right as I never could have appreciated the delicate flavours in this cigar if I smoked it earlier in my development
Let’s see how this is progressing…..
The 1999 El Rey Del Mundo Petit Corona is a good looking cigar. Sort of like Goldilocks. Not too big, not too small, just right. This is a mareva vitola that comes in at a 42 ring gauge and is 5.1 inches in length. This was a regular production cigar that came in 25 count dress boxes. The production of this viola was discontinued in 2012. * information courtesy of http://www.cubancigarwebsite.com.
The wrapper is a toasted, honey hue of brown that is smooth to the touch. Aromas of milk chocolate, cream, hazelnut and wafers emanate from the wrapper. It reminds me of a Coffee Crisp bar.
The construction is excellent. Firm to the touch with a slight give when squeezed. The triple cap looks good and the foot is packed.
A quick twist from my multi punch and we are ready to roll.
The draw is excellent. Good airflow with a slight resistance.
Initial flavours from the cold draw are: eucalyptus, citrus, cocoa, with a touch of earth and mint.
Time to take this to the flame…..
WOW!!! What a way to start. A very vibrant flavour profile as citrus, leather, eucalyptus and earth coming racing out of the gate. Strength is at a medium level and supports the flavours nicely. Luscious and smooth. The burn is razor sharp, the draw is perfect and the ash is a ‘Dirty’ whitish light grey.
The retrohale is beautiful. Lively and full of zip. Citrus, eucalyptus and touches of leather and earth move assertively through the nasal passages.
The after finish lingers forever. You notice the citrus and leather immediately, followed by eucalyptus and earth dance around on the palate for an extended period of time. Wonderful balance between strength and flavours. A joy to smoke at this stage.
A tweak here, a tweak there. The flavours take their turn in the spotlight. Slight adjustments that are district yet subtle. Cocoa has entered the fray, joining earth, leather, citrus and eucalyptus on this flavour parade. The strength is at a medium level and is perfectly supporting the flavours.
The retrohale is richer with the addition of cocoa. Wonderful complexity as it is joined by citrus and earth as it moves through the nasal passages.
The after finish has a nice depth to it and is in constant evolution. At times, the citrus is at the forefront, supported by cocoa, leather, earth and eucalyptus. Other times, the earth and leather leads the way. The medium level strength allows the flavours to have staying power on the palate and makes this cigar that much more enjoyable. Why are these discontinued????
Just a dream to smoke. Continued evolution as we enter the final third. One of the things I enjoy about this cigar is the subtle changes with each draw. The flavours are pronounced however, the emphasis on a particular flavour changes over time. Sometimes, citrus is at the forefront. Other times, cocoa and leather leads the way. The changes are slight but distinct, like watching a complex dance.
The after finish is an extension of this. Always changing but staying to the core flavours. It keeps you interested as you are guessing which flavours will be profiled with each draw. A pleasure to smoke…..
If you see this cigar, whether it is a box or a single, pick it up. These are little gems of joy that every cigar smoker should have the opportunity to enjoy.
Subtle, smooth and refined that makes you wish you stocked up on them before they were discontinued….
