The Edicion Limitada Cohiba 1966 is one of my favourite cigars. It’s one of those cigars that always puts a smile on my face, particularly after a tough day. The construction, flavours and strength have always been in balance.
This is a Canonazo Especial vitola that comes in a 52 ring gauge and is 6.5 inches in length. There were an unspecified number of 10 count varnished boite nature boxes released in 2011.
Let’s see how this is progressing…..
The wrapper is a beautiful shade of dark chestnut brown with red inflections. Smooth and silky. Aromas of barnyard, cocoa, earth and hazelnut emanate from the wrapper.
The construction is concerning. Very firm with little give when squeezed. The pig tail triple cap looks good and the foot is packed.
A quick twist from my Siglo multi punch and we are ready to roll……
The draw is a touch tight. Limited airflow and more resistance that I like. Hope that this not a sign of things to come.
Initial muted flavours from the cold draw are: brown sugar, leather, earth and a touch of grassy notes
Time to take this to the flame….
A nice start. Flavours are subtle. Cocoa, earth, roasted nuts and leather with touches of light espresso, eucalyptus and grassy notes. Strength is at a medium level but slightly fleeting.
The draw has tightens up on me, muting the smoke production and the ability to fully enjoy the flavours. The burn is decent though and the ash is a ‘Dirty’ grayish white with tiny little bubbles.
The retrohale is nice but lack power. Delicate layers of roasted nuts, leather and grassy notes meekly make their way through the nasal passages.
The after finish is fleeting on the palate due to the tight draw. The flavours are distinct but lack staying power on the palate, despite the medium strength level. Nice layers of leather, earth, eucalyptus and roasted nuts, followed by cocoa and touches of eucalyptus and light espresso at the tail end. I hope this draw opens up as I like the flavours so far…..
The cigar tightens up to the point of no return. I guess it is the cigar’s way of saying good bye, this ain’t happening tonight. LOL
Taking a draw is like trying to suck a gobstopper through a straw. The wrapper starts to crack, adding insult to injury.
Not the best of experiences. Time to part ways and look forward to the next one….. Adieu….
